The phrase "garden feature" can mean a great many
things to different people. Nassau Suffolk Landscaping
defines garden feature as any element in the landscape
above and beyond the typical that is used to enhance
the appeal or use of the garden by the homeowner. Some
of these features include a built in bar or barbecue
for dining and entertaining, recreational elements such
as a play gyms or sport courts, accents like pottery
and statuary, or outdoor lighting for nighttime appeal
and use.
Different types of gardens can be features themselves,
a smaller garden within the landscape, such as a
kitchen garden filled with vegetables, herbs or
perennials for cutting, a garden of European formality
such as a knot or parterre garden, a meadow of grasses,
a rose garden or an orchard. All can all be designed
and built into most landscapes. Natural elements such
as stone and water are also used to enhance the feeling
of a landscape. The site and sound of water evokes the
essence of an outdoor oasis, such as a waterfall into a
pool or the sound from a fountain. A stone outcrop or
gravel path can add to a landscape, creating a more
natural appeal or a reason to explore.
Furniture, pottery, sculpture and statuary are often
used to add detail. If possible these accents are
incorporated throughout the design and construction
process, but are often added once the landscape is
complete. Some consider these features as secondary,
but Nassau Suffolk Landscaping believes that, if chosen
correctly and placed accurately, they will greatly
enhance the style and experience of the landscape.
